Since 1989, AMDA has been training physicians to be effective medical directors through its Core Curriculum on Medical Direction in Long Term Care (Core Curriculum). More than 8,000 physicians serve as medical directors of long term care facilities: no other organization has addressed training of these physicians. Traditional medical education did not and still does not address these issues. The course merges clinical and administrative management techniques to turn out skilled leaders.

The areas of focus of the Core Curriculum parallel the regulations regarding medical directors' authority and purview as leaders, especially as it relates to staff interaction and organizational development. This course is the foundation for certification as an AMDA Certified Medical Director (AMDA CMD). We encourage you to support the training of medical directors by supporting the Core Curriculum.

Advanced Curriculum on Medical Direction in Long Term Care

Each year, AMDA’s Advanced Curriculum on Medical Direction in Long Term Care is specifically geared to the needs of physicians who have provided management and care services in the long term care environment. Unlike AMDA's Core Curriculum on Medical Direction, the Advanced Course changes each year to meet emerging needs, to share clinical innovations, and to hone skills related to leadership and management challenges. Among topics under consideration for 2010 are: infectious disease, quality improvement, financial issues, diminished capacity, falls, billing and coding, pharmacology updates and transitions of care.

AMDA sponsors its “Institute for LTC Practice Improvement.” This series of regional courses has been developed to provide practical education to members of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) in any setting across the Long Term Care (LTC) continuum, including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, CCRCs, hospice, and home care. This program is designed to meet the practical needs of the following members of the IDT: attending physician, PA, NP, DON, RN, administrator, and pharmacist. Participants will learn about clinical innovations and hone skills related to challenges that are common to the LTC continuum.
