State Legislative Sessions Underway for 2012
The 2012 state legislative sessions have started. Currently, 33 states are in session. We expect to see a great amount of legislative action on the state level around long term care issues including scope of practice, staffing requirements, criminal background checks and liability, look for some states to also address hot button issues.

Kohl Bill Would Allow Nurse to be Prescriber's Agent
Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) has introduced the Nursing Home Resident Pain Relief Act of 2011. The legislation is intended to help address the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) enforcement on oral prescribing of Schedule II controlled substances in long-term care facilities and to allow the nurse to serve as an agent or facility designee of the prescribing physician.

CDC Recognizes AMDA for Role in Immunization Promotion
The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded AMDA (as part of the National Influenza Vaccine Summit) with the "Excellence in Partnering" award. David Nace, MD, CMD, was AMDA's key liaison to the summit, which was held earlier this summer.

AMDA Effort Results in Increased Physician Work Values
For the past 15 years, AMDA has invested a significant amount of financial, volunteer, and staff resources to seek better reimbursement for physician work values as it pertains to nursing home care. This week, AMDA's advocacy achieved success. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed to increase physician work relative value units (RVUs) for the discharge day management codes within the nursing facility code family. AMDA Treasurer Ken Brubaker, MD, CMD, provides guidance to families placing loved ones in nursing homes
During an interview with the CBS Evening News, long-time AMDA member, current Board member, and member of the Communications Committee, Dr. Ken Brubaker, provided a number of suggestions for families transitioning loved ones into nursing facilities. AMDA has been active in addressing this issue in a number of arenas, including developing an entire chapter about the appropriate use of antipsychotics in the new (March 2011) Multidisciplinary Medication Management Manual. Study links CMDs with Nursing Home Quality
This study tests the research hypothesis that certified medical directors are able to use their training, education, and knowledge to positively influence quality of care in US nursing homes. Read the study here.
