Observation Bed & ER Observation Status and Medicare Three-day Inpatient Hospital Stay Requirement

Becomes Policy March 2008

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that both AMDA and AMA, as stated in policy since 1993 (AMDA HOD Resolutions L93 and C94), oppose the Medicare 3-day acute care hospitalization eligibility requirement for SNF admission.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that if CMS does not eliminate the 3-day stay requirement, AMDA urge CMS to allow observation bed status and emergency room observation time to count toward meeting the 3-day inpatient stay requirement.
