Influenza Vaccination Alert
CDC and Prevention's National Immunization Program
CDC has confirmed that there will be a delay in the availability of the
influenza vaccine. Reports indicate that there may be a 30% supply shortage.
The CDC recommends that a contingency plan be implemented immediately.
In the July 14, 2000 MMWR Report, the FDA and CDC are making the following
recommendations for revision to the flu vaccination campaign:
- Strongly advise that only those identified at high risk receive vaccination first, such as:
- over 65 years of age living in LTC facilities
- over 65 years of age with co-morbidities
- over 65 years of age and frail
- those with suppressed immune systems
- health care workers caring for the above
- Delay vaccinations of those not identified above
until later in the season starting with those who are over 65 years and
healthy, followed by those who are 50-65 years, deferring younger
population and low risk population until full availability.
- Extend the vaccination season possibly into February 2001.
- Alert public market to reserve vaccination for targeted audience.
- Rapid diagnosis will be key in preventing spread of influenza.
