State Chapter Overview
AMDA recently conducted a survey of the state chapters that participated in the State
Presidents' Meeting in Denver, Colorado in August. The survey is intended to provide
a brief overview of the structure of state chapters.
The survey showed that out of the 21 state chapters, meetings are scheduled annually
in 8 states, bi-annually in 11 states and bi-monthly in 2 states
Fifteen state chapters have additional staff (executive directors, administrative
assistants, or secretaries) who assist with the needs of the chapter. Other state
chapter presidents may receive administrative support through their state's medical
association or geriatrics society.
Membership categories and dues vary per state. Some may include a reduced fee for
associate/affiliate members such as administrators, dentists, pharmacists, nurses,
nurse practitioners etc. Other state chapters offer discounted rates for those who
join their chapter along with the American Geriatrics Society. Fourteen state
chapters keep track of their members through databases, two states have written
lists and two use spreadsheets. For a quick profile regarding number of members
and dues for a regular member, see Tables 1 and
2.
Regarding communication tools, 13 out of the 21 state chapters surveyed publish a
newsletter. The frequency varies in that it may be distributed monthly, bi-monthly,
quarterly, or bi-annually. Currently, 3 out of the 21 state chapters have a website -
Florida, Ohio,
and Wisconsin.
