Attending Physicians Curriculum

The 2002 Attending Physicians Curriculum pilots were reformatted to provide one half of the program over one weekend in Branson, Missouri, in July and the second half over a second weekend at the Kansas University Medical College. Results from earlier pilots showed that AMDA was not reaching its primary care physicians. Collaborative ventures with other organizations that reach primary care physicians have permitted blending the Attending Physicians Curriculum topics with topics provided by a partnering organization and have enabled AMDA to reach its target audience. Comments from the course in Branson, held in conjunction with the Rural Eastern Kansas Area Health Education Center's 16th Annual Conference on Healthy Aging for Primary Care Providers, include:

"I will share with the administrator and DON to help with in-services and with nurses/CNAs/ancillary staff to improve care for patients."
"I think this is an excellent course for people getting ready to start or recently started in geriatric care."
"I will take this information to our medical director and suggest a newsletter for Attending Physicians."
Bette Kappedal, RNC, LNHA, Grand Forks, ND

Participants especially appreciated the practical experience and openness of the faculty:

"Speakers were willing to answer questions and elicit questions...took the time to meet our needs."

Future plans for completion and dissemination of the curriculum include a more systematic marketing approach and partnerships to promote the course to the target audience. In 2003, AMDA will continue to explore how we might work with chapters to identify primary care partners in their states. Partnerships will be sought with state and national AAFP organizations, resident and fellowship programs, and state medical societies. AMDA will continue with three regional courses provided in two parts over weekends in partnership with primary care groups.

Surveys were sent to AMDA State Chapter leaders in July and again in September to learn of their interest in collaborating with the Education Committee on this effort. To date, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, New York, and Pennsylvania have expressed an interest in assisting with the broader dissemination of the Attending Physicians Curriculum. The Education Committee will determine the best strategy for partnerships and be in touch with chapter leaders again early in 2003.

Toward refinement of the curriculum, the development team will meet November 8-9, 2002, in Kansas City, Kansas, to review past evaluations, and the existing slides and syllabus to enhance materials to strengthen the resources provided for further reference and study. Team members include Daniel Swagerty, MD, MPH, CMD, Chair; Richard Ackermann, MD, CMD; Wanda Bonnel, RN, PhD; Diane Dixon, EdD; Jonathan Evans, MD, CMD; Randall Huss, MD, CMD; Janice Knebl, DO, CMD; Peter Winn, MD, CMD; and Catherine Zofkie, DO, CMD.
