CPG Implementation Tool Kit Key to Successful Guideline Use
"The We Care: Implementing Clinical Practice Guidelines
tool kit is an effective tool for successful guideline implementation,"
says Larry Lawhorne, MD, CMD past chair of AMDA's Clinical Practice
Guideline (CPG) steering committee, of this new product from AMDA. "Our
studies have shown that the main reason guideline implementation fails
is that the facilities have not taken proper steps to prepare for
implementation," he adds. Even when specific, well-founded guidelines
exist, practitioners require a broad range of supportive conditions and
organization to secure their effective use. This is where the We Care tool kit comes in and why it is so valuable.
The tool kit offers assistance in the following areas:
- Answering frequently asked questions about CPGs
- Understanding the parallels between CPG implementation and the Total Quality Management (TQM) process
- Evaluating a CPG's relevance to the patient population
- Assessing facility readiness for CPG implementation
- Overcoming obstacles to CPG implementation
- Evaluating staff knowledge and skills relevant to implementation
- Assigning project tasks
- Measuring and tracking clinical and process outcomes
- Evaluating performance based on outcomes
- Communicating with clinical peers on guideline adherence
With the teacher's primer to facilitate the use of this tool kit,
any facility can be successful in guideline implementation. For more
information on the tool kit, contact Lisa Bailey at 410/992-3118 or go
