Attending Physicians Curriculum for Long Term Care

The Attending Physicians Curriculum for Long Term Care pilot course was held in conjunction with AMDA's 25th Anniversary Symposium in San Diego this March. This was the fourth pilot presentation of this curriculum with two more scheduled in 2002. Sixty attendees registered for the 12-hour course designed for the physician who is new to providing health care services to patients in long term care settings. Participants have commented on the usefulness of the course in helping educate attending physicians and nurses new to the long term care environment.

The faculty was comprised of 10 speakers who shared their knowledge on both administrative and clinical management topics. Speakers completed a faculty training program that included attending the course. In 2001 and 2002, 18 members attended faculty training sessions and 11 have taught in the pilot programs. Results of participant and faculty evaluations will direct refinement of the curriculum and marketing efforts to reach the appropriate audience. The 12-hour pilots have shown that content requires a minimum of 18 hours to be covered adequately.

In 2002, AMDA will continue with two pilots managed by the national office and will add partnering arrangements to attract less experienced primary care physicians. Chapters may be involved if they can:

  • Identify two easily scheduled, easily accessible, regional weekend courses.
  • Secure partners with State Medical Societies, state AAFP chapters, state chapters of ACP-ASIM or local residency and geriatric fellowship programs.
  • Conduct focus group sessions during each weekend that the course is provided to obtain marketing information.
  • Assist with regional recruitment of attending physicians through alliances with other state organizations.

One half of the curriculum will be given at the 16th Annual Conference on Healthy Aging for Primary Care Providers on July 26-27, 2002, in Branson, Missouri. The second half will be provided at Kansas University Medical Center in conjunction with its Long Term Care Symposium on October 11-12, 2002.
