Summer and Winter Management Conferences

Medical directors new to long term care management/leadership challenges as well as those who have served for several years without formal training will want to attend one of the Conferences on Management and Medical Direction in Long Term Care. Both Summer and Winter Management Conferences include Modules A, B, and C of AMDA's Core Curriculum. Topic areas include federal and state regulations, residents' rights, dilemmas in biomedical ethics, quality and risk management, medical information management, management functions, governance, and the medical director's role and contract. Participants often share that they were unaware of federal and state mandates that direct the roles, functions, and responsibilities of medical directors.

The Summer Conference dates are August 12-17, 2002, in Seattle, Washington, and Winter Conference dates are December 2-7, 2002, in Savannah, Georgia. Participants of previous conferences should note the new beginning date of Monday afternoon with completion of the course early Saturday afternoon and plan their travel and lodging accordingly.

The Winter Conference expands on topic areas of the Core Curriculum by offering advanced sessions on topic issues of most critical interest to experienced medical directors. The Advanced Course in Medical Direction will be offered on December 3-5, 2002 in Savannah, Georgia. Most participants in the Advanced Course will remain for the Curriculum on Clinical Management in Long Term Care to be offered December 5-7, 2002. This year the advanced course will provide updated information on regulatory issues and payment reform, leadership issues, and information mastery and management. The clinical course will include discussion on emerging studies and treatment options in wound care, osteoporosis, fall prevention, pain management and antibiotic resistant microorganisms. A session on ethical decision-making will guide participants through a series of case studies.
