Winter Management Conference
AMDA's 2001 Winter Conference on November 26-December 2, 2001, in Tucson, Arizona, offers something for
everyone. Medical directors interested in completing the Core Curriculum can
take all three modules. Experienced medical directors and those seeking
recertification credit hours should attend the Advanced Course in Medical
Direction. Attending physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and
others involved in the interdisciplinary care team will be interested in AMDA's
premiering Clinical Management Course. Courses are scheduled so that
participants may take full advantage of as many programs as possible for their
personal education plan.
The Core Curriculum schedule for the week will be Module B on
November 27-28, Module C on November 29-30, and Module A on December
1-2, so that physicians who attended Module A in Atlanta may switch to
the Clinical Management Course on Saturday. The Advanced Course will
run mid-week, November 28-30, so that attendees may participate in both
the Advanced Course and the Clinical Management Course. The Clinical
Management Course begins after the close of the Advanced Course on
November 30, and continues through 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 2.
The Advanced Course in Medical Direction will provide challenging
topics for experienced medical directors. This year's line-up includes
sessions on regulatory updates and liability, claims, and compliance
plans, and clinical practice guideline implementation strategies for
pain management and pressure ulcers taught by Jacob Dimant, MD, CMD;
current survey issues and update on medication and pharmacy issues by
Steve Levenson, MD, CMD; and leadership roles in team building and
managing change by Richard Jacobs, MD, MBA. Keith Krein, MD, CMD, with
members of the Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis from the
University of Wisconsin will provide an intensive workshop on using
quality indicators to develop quality management programs. Alva "Buzz"
Baker, MD, CMD, will present a hands-on session about tracking and
using data enhanced by CD-ROM. Participants are encouraged to bring
their personal laptop computers to get the most effective learning from
this session.
This year AMDA will expand its week-long conference with a new
Clinical Management Course that has been created to meet the needs and
requests of members for clinical updates that are pertinent to their
long term care practice. Topics include pain management taught by Wendy
Stein, MD, CMD; palliative care by Laurel Coleman, MD, CMD; wound care
by David Thomas, MD, CMD; diabetes update by John Morley, MD; and
hydration issues by Dan Osterweil, MD, CMD. Neurology updates include
movement disorders and the most current information on Parkinson's
Disease. In response to requests from annual meeting attendees, Michael
Maddens, MD, CMD, will assemble a panel of speakers from different
practice environments to discuss infection control issues in long term
care facilities.
