AMDA Will Pilot Three Conferences for LTC Attending Physicians
Progress continues on the refinement of this new educational endeavor.
AMDA's staff and Education Committee Chair Daniel Swagerty, Jr., MD, CMD, have
worked with state chapters to determine dates and locations for
three pilot courses to be offered
over the next nine months.
The courses are scheduled for:
- September 8-9, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia
- January 12-13, 2002 in Portland, Oregon
- March 23-24, 2002 in conjunction with AMDA's 25th Anniversary Symposium in San Diego, California
This 12-hour curriculum is targeted to the community-based attending
physician who sees patients in the long term care (LTC) setting and needs
guidance and training on the administrative and clinical basics. Attendance in
this course will help assist physicians to deliver quality care to this frail
population and to adhere to regulations in the LTC environment.

Taking the LTC Attending
Physicians Curriculum Beyond March 2002
As we prepare to host the three pilot conferences of
the LTC Attending Physicians
Curriculum, we would also like to simultaneously train new teachers to expand the qualified faculty.
Our goal is to have experienced trainers throughout
the country, so wide dissemination of this curriculum can begin after the
pilots are held.
It is our hope to identify approximately six people
willing to attend training sessions before each pilot on the dates of September
7, January 11, March 20, and then attend the course itself to watch the
curriculum being taught by the faculty.
The AMDA state chapter members and leaders who
participated in the attending physician training in March 2001 in Atlanta
should plan to attend one of the three pilot courses to complete their
training.

for this curriculum, please contact Carla Fiore, Professional Development
Administrative Assistant, at 410/740-9743, ext. 129 or e-mail to

As medical directors and state leaders, we hope that you will encourage
attending physicians at the nursing facilities you serve to attend this
conference. You have repeatedly requested that AMDA design a curriculum that
addresses the needs of the attending physician so that they help you, as
medical director, by being a better informed physician and a contributing
member of the care team.
Topics, provided in 40-minute sessions with question-and-answer
periods, include Roles of the Attending Physician, Consultant, and
Mid-Level Practitioner; Summary of Federal Regulations and Interpretive
Guidelines; Documentation Requirements; Billing, Coding, and Informed
Consent; Communication Issues; Working with Families; Common Geriatric
Syndromes and Clinical Issues in Long Term Care.
We encourage you to print and distribute the
curriculum to attending physicians. Follow this link
for complete information and registration details.
For registration information, please contact Laurie Wilson, Registrar, at

information regarding the course, please contact Carla Fiore, Professional
Development Administrative Assistant, at 410/740-9743, ext. 129 or e-mail to
