2002 Winter Management Conference - Savannah
AMDA's Winter Management Conference in Savannah, Georgia in December
was the best-attended conference to date. Nearly 250 physicians took
advantage of the conference to earn CME and CMD credit hours through
attendance at Modules A, B, C of the Core Curriculum or at the Advanced
Course on Medical Direction and the Clinical Management Course.
Participants' enthusiasm spilled out into hallway and luncheon
discussions.
Forty-one experienced physicians attended the Advanced Course, which
received kudos for the learning level of the content and the
opportunity for small group problem solving and "out of the box"
approaches to leadership issues. Important, recurring themes are a
staple of this course and included emerging regulatory and survey
issues, presented by Jacob Dimant, MD, CMD, who spoke on risk
management and current principles of leadership. Daniel Burkus, MBA,
Richard Schamp, MD, CMD, and Alva "Buzz" Baker, MD, CMD provided
resources for use of administrative data sets, for mastery of research
online, and to create and interpret control charts as tools for
continuous quality improvement. Discussions of ethical decision-making
and communication in long term care rounded out the program.
The debut of AMDA's new palliative care curriculum was the highlight
of the Clinical Course. Demonstration of products and treatment options
for advanced wound care, discussion of environmental control of
antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, and recommendations through case
presentations for non-pharmacological approaches to behavior management
provided practical suggestions and the latest thinking in each of these
areas. Joseph Ryan, MD, MPH, of Liberty Corner, New Jersey, summed up
the experience: "AMDA has done an outstanding job of systematizing care
for skilled nursing and medical direction. No detail goes unaddressed.
It offers an excellent review and update for state of the art care in
the long term care setting."
