Core Curriculum Update
In November 2002, members of the Core Curriculum Revision Workgroup
spent two days in the AMDA office updating the slides for each of the
Core Curriculum topics. They worked collaboratively, critiquing the
work as it progressed. At the end of the work session, the group
proposed the following timeline to debut the Curriculum at AMDA's
Winter Management Conference in December 2003.
June 2003: Review/revise slide sets; assemble syllabus
July 2003: Review content/syllabus/evaluations
October 2003: Faculty training
December 2003: Curriculum debuts
February 2004: Review evaluation summaries; modify course as necessary
Summer 2004: Next iteration of Curriculum
The revision workgroup has structured the course so that adult
learning practices have been incorporated into both parts of the
emerging content. Pre and post self-assessment tools will provide
reinforcement for the learner and serve as one measure of the course
outcomes.
Part one frames the course and prepares participants to move through
the Curriculum with varying teaching methods and formats. It includes
the subjects that are the foundation of the Curriculum and critical
knowledge on which part two of the course is based. This portion of the
Curriculum will be offered as a live course in December 2003 and is a
prerequisite of registration for part two.
Through use of practical approaches and interactive methods, such as
small group discussions and projects that integrate the overall
content, part two will support each learner in the development of an
action plan specific to his/her management challenges in long-term care
settings.
Topic areas in part two include new sections on administrative data
sets and systems theory with practical ideas for application. The
current topics of Management Functions and Governance have been merged
into a new heading--Medical Director's Relationship to the
Organization--that synthesize the elements of leadership, management,
and governance.
If you are midstream in completing the existing modules, you
will need to complete them by August 2003 according to the following
schedule. Otherwise, the entire Core will need to be completed as the format, methodologies, and order of content have been restructured.
- March 5, 6, 8, 9, 2003:
- Module C in conjunction with the Annual Symposium in Orlando.
Anyone who needs to complete Module C at the annual symposium should
register early as seating may be limited.
- August 18-23, 2003:
- Modules A, B, C will be given one last time at the Summer
Management Conference at the new Hyatt Chesapeake Bay Resort in
Cambridge, Maryland.
- March 4-7, 2004:
- Module A will be offered one last time in conjunction with the 2004
Annual Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona. Registration will be open only to
those who have completed Modules B and C at previous courses.
