Clinical Affairs Update

AMDA's Multidisciplinary Medication Management committee, chaired by Rosaly Correa-de-Araujo, MD, MSc, PhD, along with a group of expert volunteers is in the beginning stages of creating a tool kit for management of antithrombotics and anticoagulants in the long term care setting. "The development of this tool kit, which is particularly needed in this setting, will be a useful tool in helping to reduce inappropriate management of these drugs," states Dr. Correa. The kit will debut at AMDA's 2004 annual symposium in March.

Some of the areas to be covered will be:

  • Scope of problem
  • Indications for use of antithrombotics and anticoagulants
  • Decision making steps--a multi-disciplinary approach
  • Drug selection with a description of each of the drugs within the classes including precautions
  • Multidisciplinary drug monitoring
  • Cost considerations
  • QI/Tools section
