Date and location selection for the 2012 Advanced Curriculum offerings is underway. We will post this information as soon as we have contracted sites.

This course is specifically geared to the needs of physicians who provide management and clinical care services in the long term care environment.  Content is applicable to any setting or combination of settings across the long term care continuum.  The course provides practical insights and tools with implications for immediate implementation upon return home.  Participation in the Advanced Curriculum Course is also an excellent way to earn required education hours for recertification.

Each year course content changes to meet emerging needs, share clinical innovations, and hone skills related to leadership and management challenges.

Target Audience

This course will meet the needs for professional growth of experienced medical directors and attending physicians.

Medical directors who are new to long term care should consider beginning with AMDA’s Core Curriculum on Medical Direction. Please refer to www.amda.com/education/core on AMDA’s web site for description and registration information about this course.


Overall Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • List possible goals of care for diabetic management for elders in NF, SNF, and hospice, nursing home depending upon life expectancy and co-morbidities.
  • Discuss changes in the facility Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS 3.0) that will affect monitoring of quality in the facility.
  • Describe what the 1) Medical Director, 2) Nursing Director, and 3) Rehabilitation Director should provide to IDT to improve patient care.
  • Name key departments within the facility and problems which may arise within these departments that affect care in the facility.
  • Identify roles for the medical director in antibiotic stewardship.
  • Define the function of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual as a reference source for regulations concerning billing and coding.
  • Choose appropriate levels of billing for hospice and palliative care that reflect the effort and time of the clinician.
  • Explain different models of care to manage wounds in Long Term Care.
  • Describe a process for identifying and managing issues related to the attending physicians that affect care in the facility.
  • Identify skin lesions having a high risk for malignancy.
  • Discuss how the consultant geripsychiatrist can be involved in the IDT and the QI process.

CME Accreditation Statement
The American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing education for physicians.

AMA/PRA Designation Statement
The American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) designates this educational activity for a maximum of 15.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CMD Credit Statement
This seminar has been approved for a total of 15.5 credit hours toward certification as a Certified Medical Director in Long-Term Care (CMD). 13.0 credits have been designated as Management education credits and 2.5 hours have been designated as Clinical education credits. The AMDA CMD program is administered by the American Medical Directors Certification Program. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit actually spent on the activity.

AAFP Credit
This Live activity, Advanced Curriculum on Medical Direction in Long Term Care, with a beginning date of September 23, 2011, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 14.50 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AGS
This CME activity is endorsed by the American Geriatrics Society.  Credits earned from this activity may be counted toward the AGS Geriatrics Recognition Award.
