This course is specifically geared to the needs of physicians who provide management and clinical care services in the long term care environment. Content is applicable to any setting or combination of settings across the long term care continuum. The course provides practical insights and tools with implications for immediate implementation upon return home. Participation in the Advanced Curriculum Course is also an excellent way to earn required education hours for recertification.
Each year course content changes to meet emerging needs, share clinical innovations, and hone skills related to leadership and management challenges.

Target Audience
This course will meet the needs for professional growth of experienced medical directors and attending physicians.
Medical directors who are new to long term care should consider beginning with AMDA’s Core Curriculum on Medical Direction. Please refer to www.amda.com/education/core on AMDA’s web site for description and registration information about this course.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:
- Identify treatments for infectious conditions such as MRSA, VRE, and C diff in long term care practice;
- Use guidelines plus consensus statements on risk to determine whether to offer anti-thrombotic agents in long-term care;
- Examine options for transitioning a patient from one system of care to another, taking into account rehabilitation needs and payer;
- Identify emerging medications, consider their pharmaco-kinetics in the elderly, and relate clinical settings in which they may be useful in the frail elder;
- Apply leadership skills to enhance the effectiveness of the medical director on the financial state of the facility;
- Enhance skills of the interdisciplinary team to reduce the risk of falls in long-term care;
- Understand the differences between limitations in rights for guardianship, conservatorship, and power of attorney;
- Consider clinical data to determine the capacity of a LTC resident to make a variety of decisions;
- List recent changes in coding and billing likely to affect clinical practice;
- Utilize evidence based data to classify residents that may benefit from typical orthopedic procedures;
- Choose quality improvement techniques to better evaluate their facility.

The American Medical Directors Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians
CME Designation Statement
AMDA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
CMD Designation Statement
This program has been approved for 6 hours in clinical education and 10 hours in management education toward certification/recertification as a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care (AMDA CMD). Physicians should only claim credit for the number of hours they participated in the educational activity. The AMDA CMD program is administered by the American Medical Directors Certification Program (AMDCP).
