Consumer Corner

Choosing a nursing facility in which to place a loved one can be a difficult and confusing decision. Several years ago, the federal government's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) established the "Nursing Home Compare" Web site to post detailed information about the past performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country. Consumers visit the site approximately 100,000 times per month.

While there is good information on the site, there are some missing pieces; and it can be hard to understand or use the data. At the same time, several sources-including Representative Henry Waxman and Senator Charles Grassley-have suggested that some of the data on the site is flawed and can be misunderstood. The two lawmakers wrote a report saying that the Nursing Home Compare information doesn't show all of the most serious violations-those that immediately threaten the lives and/or safety of residents--that have occurred in facilities.

AMDA would like to make it easier for consumers to fairly evaluate nursing facilities. Toward that end, we developed this "Consumer Corner" page, which includes information in a reader-friendly format that helps answer some of the questions family members and others have about nursing facility quality and other issues.
