Choosing a Nursing Home

Choosing a nursing facility for yourself or a loved one can be challenging. There are many options, and they vary in size, cost, and the type and scope of services offered. Your healthcare provider can help you make this difficult decision in a way that makes sure you find the best facility that meets your needs most closely. By working with your healthcare provider, you can determine what type of setting is most appropriate for you or your loved one and what to look for and ask when you visit facilities.

AMDA physicians in regions throughout the country have information and guidance on this topic. You can listen to practitioners offer key points about how to choose a nursing facility and how you and your doctor can help your loved one find the best setting where they will receive quality care and enjoy the best possible quality of life.*

“Caring for Consumers” clip and copy advice sheets, designed for residents/patients, family members, and future consumers of long term care services, include an introduction to the topic, tips for addressing the issue and enhancing care, a list of questions to ask the physician, and a list of additional resources. Feel free to print and use when speaking to your family and physician.

Taking the Stress, Worry, and Confusion out of Choosing a Nursing Facility

Additionally, AMDA suggests that consumers ask questions about the facility's medical director. Each facility is required by law to have a physician medical director to oversee care and quality, as well as the workings of the interdisciplinary team (including attending physicians who care for individual patients). An involved and informed medical director plays a key role in ensuring quality care for nursing facility patients. Therefore, consumers may wish to ask:

  • How many hours is the medical director in the facility each month?
  • What role does the medical director play in quality improvement/management?
  • How can I set up an appointment with the medical director?
  • Has your medical director obtained a CMD designation?
