American Medical Directors Certification Program (AMDCP) Recertification Requirements
Certified medical director (CMD) recertification is required every six years. Requirements include:
- Current CMD credential;
- Possession of a current, unrestricted state medical license;
- Service as a medical director during the past 6 years*;
- Clinical and medical management education:
- completion of 60 clinical AMA PRA category 1™ clinical medicine education hours, completed within the preceding six (6) years; and
- completion of 60 hours of Medical Direction/Management education hours, completed within the preceding six (6) years **A minimum of 50% of Medical Direction/Management must come from AMDCP pre-approved CMD credits OR
- an Individualized Education Program (IEP) documenting the equivalent of 75 clinical AMA PRA category 1™ education hours and 75 hours of education in Medical Direction/Management. **A minimum of 50% of Medical Direction/Management must come from AMDCP pre-approved CMD credits.
- **Attendance at a minimum of one AMDA annual meeting during the six-year certification period.
*Recertification candidates may apply if they are not currently medical directors in long term care settings but are actively seeking a position in long term care medical direction or serve in an equivalent academic or administrative role.
Courtesy reminder letters are sent to CMDs prior to the expiration date of certification.
Application Steps
- Complete the application form.
- Submit the application form with required documentation and the appropriate fee by April 1 or October 1.
- If you wish to have immediate notification of receipt of your application, send the forms by Federal Express, UPS, or other courier that provides confirmation.
- Staff will review the application and send a letter of notification that:
- Your application is complete for review at the next scheduled application review meeting. OR
- Your application requires additional documentation/information with a due date that will take the date of the next scheduled application review meeting into consideration.
- Application review meetings are held in June and December of each year.
- Candidates will receive notification of their status by mail about four weeks after the application review meeting.
