CMD Program Reaches Milestone: 2,500th Physician Receives Certification

Robert Lebow, MD, CMD, has become the 2,500th physician to receive the Certified Medical Director (CMD) certification from the American Medical Directors Certification Program (AMDCP). Dr. Lebow, medical director at Radius Health Center in Massachusetts, received his CMD is December. The CMD program started in 1991 and had certified a total of 2,520 medical directors by the end of 2008.

“It’s an honor to have become emblematic of the CMD designation. However, I haven’t done anything more than other CMDs. It’s humbling to be in such prestigious company,” said Dr. Lebow. He added, “The CMD program does a lot to improve care for seniors, and it provides physicians such as myself with education that you just don’t get anywhere else.”

The CMD Core Curriculum program is invaluable in helping physicians “understand the systems and pressures under which we operate in nursing homes and learn ways to protect our patients and facilities,” says Dr. Lebow. “People who take the courses are a friendly group, and we developed camaraderie. It’s helpful to meet others who are wrestling with the same challenges and can share ideas and solutions,” he added. He noted that he also appreciated the opportunities for on-line learning.

Dr. Lebow had multiple reasons for pursuing his CMD. He explained, “I may want to become medical director at more facilities, and the CMD makes me more marketable. But, more importantly, having this designation is a point of pride. It says that I’ve sought to grow as a professional and that I’ve achieved something valuable. Being a CMD says that I have lived up to a certain standard of care.”

Not only does the CMD give Dr. Lebow a sense of pride; it also impresses his facilities. “One has CMD decals at both exits. The leadership is proud that I’ve achieved this; and it’s important to them that I stay current in my education and training,” he said. Dr. Lebow stressed that his facilities have benefited from his CMD training. “Every day I use something I learned in the program. This happens many times daily in small ways—in terms of maximizing safety and quality, improving care processes, and increasing staff, resident, and family satisfaction,” he said.

To recognize the milestone of being the 2,500th CMD, Dr. Lebow will receive a complimentary registration for AMDA’s 2010 Annual Symposium in Long Beach, California.
