AMDA Foundation

The AMDA Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organization. The Foundation's mission: “The AMDA Foundation advances the quality of life for persons in long term care (LTC) through inspiring and educating future and current health care professionals.

The Long Term Care Research Network was established in 1999 and provides a mechanism to meet the needs of both community-based medical directors and established researchers. The Network was established to advance the research agenda for long term care and provide a way to recruit patients and facilities for long term care projects. The Research Network holds two conferences each year where researchers are able to discuss research in long term care and collaborate with colleagues on potential research projects. There are currently more than 350 members of the Long Term Care Research Network and they represent all disciplines in the long term care setting. All AMDA members are eligible and encouraged to join.

  • The AMDA Foundation Futures Program is an intensive learning experience designed to expose residents and fellows to the numerous career opportunities in long term care and support their attendance at the AMDA Annual Symposium. More than 500 primary care residents and geriatric fellows have participated in the program since its inception and for many it has marked the beginning of their long term care careers.
  • The AMDA Foundation/Pfizer Quality Improvement Awards is a program designed to encourage the development of innovative projects that will help make a direct impact on the quality of long term care. Projects are conducted in a long term care setting and fit into one of four categories including: Education, Quality Improvement Programs, Research Projects or Health Literacy. The program has awarded more than $300,000 in research funding.
  • Created in 2007, the AMDA Foundation/Evercare® Awards provide awards for “Improving the Quality of Life for Persons Living in Nursing Homes". Awards are based on programs nursing facilities have implemented and demonstrated to improve the quality of life for their residents. One of the awards is given specifically for improved advanced care planning and/or palliative care programs.

The AMDA Foundation is supported by contributions from AMDA members, the general public, the private sector, foundations and the government. The AMDA Foundation is recognized as a public charity, an exempt organization under Sec. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Gifts or contributions to the AMDA Foundation are deductible as charitable contributions for federal tax purposes to the fullest extent of the law.

AMDCP - AMDA Certified Medical Director Program

Certification Program Logo

The AMDA Certified Medical Director (CMD) in Long Term Care Program was developed by AMDA in 1991, after three years of research and development using surveys, consensus conferences, and experts to define the core skills and knowledge necessary for effective medical direction.

The Certified Medical Director program recognizes the dual clinical and managerial roles of the medical director. Certification requires indicators of competence in clinical medicine and medical management in long term care. The certification process is based on an experiential model that incorporates existing mechanisms such as fellowship programs, board certification, continuing medical education, CMD-approved and AMDA-sponsored courses in medical direction, and other continuing education programs to fulfill certification requirements. Currently, no additional examination or testing is required.

Serving your State Chapter should be a rewarding experience, not a burden. We can help you with daily responsibilities, so you can spend your time being strategic while helping your members with issues or concerns that require your leadership.

State Chapters

AMDA is committed to helping state chapters provide member advocacy and support on a local level. State chapters also drive the national association through the House of Delegates meeting at AMDA's annual meeting, Long Term Care Medicine.

Each year state chapter representatives at the annual meeting are given the opportunity to vote on AMDA policies and direction. The state chapters help identify important issues for AMDA to pursue and information individual physicians need to perform their roles as medical directors.
